Lake Mac launch services best bet as water drops

Private boat launch services at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area will provide the best access to Nebraska’s largest lake for the remainder of the season.

Due to longstanding drought, water levels continue to drop at the irrigation reservoir in Keith County. Water levels were last this low in 2006.

As of Aug. 7, Spillway Bay’s single-lane boat ramp is the only one still in the water; but within the month, water levels are expected to be below the ramp’s 3,202 elevation.

Guests taking advantage of the lake’s abundant opportunities for boating, fishing, paddling, swimming and shoreline recreation will find most services still available.

Those hoping to launch their boats or camp in a recreational vehicle or bus on the beach are encouraged to schedule launching services in advance. Three local vendors are providing services: Van’s Lakeview, 308-287-8267; Ski Patrol, 308-726-7368; and Big Mac Marina, 308-355-5555.

“By arranging vendor services ahead of time, parkgoers can ensure they have the experience they are looking for while remaining safe,” said Patrick Schnell, park superintendent. “Despite low water conditions, Lake Mac remains the state’s largest reservoir with plenty of room for summer recreation.”

Those launching from the beach on their own should be aware they do so at their own risk. Water and shoreline conditions are constantly changing, and visitors should always watch for underwater hazards — particularly along shore areas.

Boaters also should not travel past Sand Point on the far western portion of the lake with any watercraft.

Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended to access beach areas, whether for boating or camping as driving on the beach is not recommended for large vehicles. Beach towing and recovery services for stuck vehicles are scheduled around other towing priorities and may be limited at times.

Day-use visitors are reminded all personal belongings, including canopies, beach gear and utility trailers, must be removed from the beach upon departure.

ATVs and golf carts are not permitted within the state recreation area without proper permitting. Visitors operating unpermitted vehicles may be subject to a citation.

All major recreation services around the lake remain open, including beaches, campgrounds, lodging facilities, restaurants, convenience stores and other visitor services.

Lake McConaughy is a multi-use lake that balances irrigation and environmental needs with recreational opportunities. Recreation on the lakes is managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission through a lease with Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District.
