Huskers Top Creighton in Spring Exhibition


OMAHA, Neb. - The Nebraska volleyball team defeated Creighton in a spring exhibition match on Friday night in front of a crowd of 2,374 at D.J. Sokol Arena. 

The Huskers won the first three sets 25-19, 25-18, 25-15. The Jays picked up a 25-15 win in a bonus fourth set. 

Teraya Sigler had 11 kills and hit .647 to lead the Huskers. Manaia Ogbechie and Kenna Cogill each had six kills. Andi Jackson, Harper Murray, Jayden Robinson and Skyler Pierce all had four kills. 

Bergen Reilly had 20 assists and seven digs, while Campbell Flynn had 18 assists and four digs. Laney Choboy and Olivia Mauch both had 10 digs. 

NU hit .248 and Creighton hit .171. 

Set 1: The Huskers went up 7-4 after a back-row blast by Sigler and a kill by Keri Leimbach via a diving dig over the net. Creighton tied it 9-9 before a block by Williams and Murray put NU back on top. Sigler's fourth kill started a 3-0 run that made it 13-10 Big Red. Kills by Jackson, Sigler and Robinson made it 19-12 Huskers, and NU went on to win 25-19 on a kill by Keoni Williams.  

Set 2: A kill by Pierce and solo block by Ogbechie got NU off to a 3-1 start, and Murray placed a kill to make it 6-2. But the Bluejays went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-6 lead. With the score tied 12-12, Murray and Jackson teamed up for a block, and Virginia Adriano terminated from the right side before combining with Jackson to thwart a Bluejay attack for a 15-12 Husker lead at the media timeout. Another Murray kill and an ace by Adriano made it 19-13. Pierce and Adriano tacked on a kill as the Huskers finished off a 25-18 win. 

Set 3: Creighton jumped out to an early lead, but kills by Ogbechie, Sigler and Cogill put NU up 8-6. Cogill and Sigler posted a block together, and Sigler ran into the scorer's table to save a ball and eventually solo blocked a Creighton attack on the same rally for a 12-7 Husker lead. Cogill added a pair of kills, and a block by Ogbechie increased NU's lead to 15-9. Ogbechie added three more kills around one from Sigler to help NU to a 20-12 advantage. Sigler, Cogill and Robinson smashed kills, and Cogill finished it off for a 25-15 win.   

Set 4: Creighton got off to a hot start taking a 7-1 lead. Gabby DiVita, Ryan Hunter and Williams tallied kills to pull NU within 11-7, but the Bluejays rebuilt a 15-8 lead by the media timeout and went on to win 25-15. 

Up Next: Nebraska will play its third and final spring match in Chadron on Saturday, April 25. The Huskers will take on Northern Colorado at the Chicoine Center. First serve is set for Noon (MT)/1 p.m. (CT). Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. (MT).
