Hastings Parks and Recreation Department's Halloween Light Fight contest Winner Announced

This year’s winning display for the Parks and Recreation Department’s Halloween Light Fight received inspiration from above, and below.

Grant and Tammi Jacobsen received the most points among the 11 competitors in this year’s Hastings Parks and Recreation Department’s Halloween Light Fight contest with the theme “Heaven and Hell” for the display at their house, 721 N. Briggs Ave.

The display includes a flying gargoyle suspended next to the Jacobsens’ front porch, skeletons crawling out of the ground, as well as skeletons in a cage that is lighted to look like it is on fire. An illuminated cross is nearby.

Voting took place Oct. 16-25 on the Hastings Parks and Recreation Department’s Facebook page. One like equaled one point, a comment was worth two points and a share was worth three points.

The Jacobsens’ house received 100 reactions, 46 comments and 104 shares.

Grant and Tammi are no strangers to winning the Hastings Parks and Recreation Department’s Halloween Light Fight, having also won in 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025.

The Jacobsens’ display in 2024 had a football theme. Last year’s display had an ancient-Egyptian theme.

Many of the comments on video of the Jacobsens’ yard that was posted to the Parks and Recreation Department’s Facebook feed for voting complemented the continued creativity Grant and Tammi put into their display each year.

About a month of work goes into each of the Jacobsens’ displays.

Other homes participating in the contest included 926 N. Washington Ave., 224 W. Fifth St., 731 N. Fourth Ave., 302 W. Third St., 734 E. Fourth St., 506 S. New York Ave., 921 W. 11th St., 1000 N. Lincoln Ave., 2908 Merle Ave., 741 S. Colorado Ave. Videos of each entry are available on the Parks and Recreation Department’s Facebook page.
